A Change is Gonna Come, diptych, oil on canvas

These works address coastal erosion. With sea levels rising and more coastal flooding
predicted, the frequency of extreme storms are set to increase. Severe storms have caused
levels of damage which would normally take years. They erode vast areas of cliffs, affect
coastal paths, wildlife sites, nature reserves and coastal communities.
This diptych highlights the violence and unpredictability of the natural world. Many violent
storms start out at sea with unstable air and moisture, and eventually attack the coastline,
where they cause cliff erosion on soft geology.
I deliberately experimented with the juxtaposition of detail and gestural abstraction in order
to gives these works a feeling of instability. This clash of style and approach parallels the
        subject matter.
